Introduction to the film festival
The Bali International Film Festival (Balinale) is held annually from 1-7 June on the island of Bali, Indonesia, attracting a diverse and enthusiastic audience of film lovers, filmmakers, and a vibrant local community.
In 2026, we will celebrate our 19th edition of independent local and international movies, along with a series of professional industry-related forums, plus arts and educational events.
Film submissions from all genres of fiction and documentary, feature-length and short, from Indonesia and around the world are accepted for consideration in our festival of in-cinema and outdoor screenings. AI-produced films go through the same submission process and should be initially submitted under animation. Films featuring some AI content as a special effect should be submitted to the regular category.
The festival has a juried competition with awards in several artistic and technical categories for Narrative Features, Documentaries, and Short Films.
As an Academy Award® Qualifying Festival for Best Short Film, Balinale winner may be eligible for Academy Award® consideration.
We hold several events, including the Bali Film Forum, for the film and television industry, focusing on building an effective and meaningful dialogue between Indonesian professionals and their international counterparts.
