Introduction to the film festival

Who we are

Berlinale Talents is a talent development programme that explores the how and why of movie making. Since 2003, it has grown to become a one-of-a-kind forum for film professionals and cinema lovers alike, featuring public talks, discipline-specific workshops, project development Labs and networking events. While the Berlinale sections showcase films in all their facets and the European Film Market is the festival's most vibrant business hub, our focus is creative people and how they see the world through a different lens.

Our Mission

As cultural facilitators, we aim to bring about sustainable connections among the world’s most promising filmmakers and series creators. Our participants stand out for their creative vision as well as their impact on their local communities. We seek to empower them by offering guidance, mentorship, contacts and exposure for their projects.

In addition to the events in Berlin, we offer year-round fellowships and seven international offshoots, spanning the globe from Latin America to the Middle East and Asia, which foster top emerging talent in those regions.

If you are a filmmaker, we want to boost and amplify your voice. If you are a sponsor, we welcome you on board in supporting the talent of tomorrow. And if you are a filmgoer, we cannot wait to give you a glimpse behind the scenes of the magic we call cinema.

What's on offer

Our public events at the HAU Hebbel am Ufer theatres offer film enthusiasts the chance to engage with the leading lights of the film and art worlds. As "Berlinale's House of Talent", we welcome many guests from the programme sections and enlarge the festival community with other experts you can only meet at Berlinale Talents. So you might take in a conversation with Cate Blanchett, attend a panel with the International Jury, or learn about the miniature set design on Wes Anderson’s films. Public tickets are available online; sign up for our newsletter and social media for updates.

Our specialised industry events are for 200 carefully selected emerging film professionals who congregate in Berlin to share and deepen their craft, meet collaborators and develop new projects. As a participating Talent, you’ll attend a packed schedule of meetings, workshops, pitches and networking events in cooperation with the European Film Market, the World Cinema Fund and the Berlinale Co-Production Market. Along the way, you might find yourself chatting with a Chinese producer, an Iranian cinematographer or a Colombian editor. With around 100 smaller and bigger events on offer, you’re bound to leave inspired by new collaborators and as a proud member of the Talents family with more than 9,000 alumni and an impressive track record from arthouse to the Academy Awards.

Talent comes with the responsibility to share, and our entire programme, from the Summit events to the Studios and the project development labs, is focused not just on what the mentors and other experts have to offer, but what our Talents can bring to the group too. Each and everyone’s input and the interaction and exchange among the participants drive the sessions forward and are a valuable addition to the tapestry of the six days.

Talents Footprints

When the UN set out their Sustainable Development Goals we embraced them as an opportunity to reflect on our own practices and those of our Talents. We introduced a range of relevant events and are taking constant measures to better ourselves. What’s more, we provide support throughout the year with fellowship and mentoring programmes that aim for sustainable growth.

The Talents as well as our more than 9,000 alums are not only leaving an impact on the big screen but are also incredibly aware and active in their daily social environments. With our Talents Footprints programmes, we give them a chance to foreground and further develop their own film-related social initiatives in these four key areas:

Gender Equality and Diversity Quality

Education and Work Peace

Justice and Understanding

Environmental Awareness and Climate Action

Mastercard Enablement Programme

Dedicated to doing well by doing good, the Talents Footprints Mastercard Enablement Programme provides the selected fellows with mentoring, financial support and public awareness for their film-related initiatives, networks or platforms that contribute to their local communities in an inclusive and impactful way.

Who can apply?

Initiators of and activists with film-related social initiatives, who participated as officially invited Talents.

What kind of project can I submit?

You can apply with a film-related social initiative focusing on inclusive, innovative and impactful solutions in one of the following four key domains: Gender Equality and Diversity; Quality Education and Work; Peace, Justice and Understanding; Environmental Awareness and Climate Action. This can be for example a stakeholder group with film-related social goals, training institution, lab or hub, community film venue, festival or distribution platform, or environmental initiative. The development, production or post-production of singular film projects is not fundable.

What’s the structure?

Selected fellows receive 5,000 Euro financial support for project-related investments and practical support action, as well as the equivalent in mentorship. A personalised mentorship support package is developed with each fellow, starting off already with a kick-off workshop while being in Berlin. Once goals have been identified through the individual plans, the Berlinale Talents team will help each fellow to reach the aim of their social initiative over a number of online meetings with mentors. In order to increase sustainability also beyond the duration of the programme, two fellows per year receive additional support and return to Berlin one more time.

What will I take away?

This is an opportunity to develop your initiative based on the tutorship of dedicated mentors, public awareness and financial support. The aim of the Talents Footprints - Mastercard Enablement Programme is to allow you to take your project to the next step, improve your personal and professional capacities, and help to create sustainable change in the Talents community and beyond.

How do I apply?

Applications for the Talents Footprints Mastercard Enablement Programme 2025 are open from September 9-25, 2024. The new Fellows and Alumni will be notified of their selection by latest end of December, and publicly announced during the Berlinale in February 2025.

Mastercard Enablement Programme 2025

The globally unique Talents Footprints - Mastercard Enablement Programme returns for its fifth edition in 2025, where Berlinale Talents and co-partner Mastercard will support two new projects. This year’s jury includes German actor Sibel Kekilli (Head On, Game of Thrones), Vincenza Cristina Saccà (Senior Vice President Consumer Marketing & Sponsorship Europe at Mastercard), and German filmmaker, screenwriter, and Talents alum Dieu Hao Do (Hao Are You).

Two new fellowship recipients will receive substantial mentoring and financial support over the course of a year.

In addition, two alumni of the programme will return to the Berlinale to participate in exclusive networking opportunities such as the Dine & Shine during the festival, fostering peer-to-peer connections and facilitating the exchange of important knowledge between these socially-minded pioneers and their initiatives.

Kompagnon Fellowship

The annual Kompagnon Fellowship is awarded jointly by Berlinale Talents and the Berlinale programme sections. In 2024, it was open to screenwriters and directors based in Germany who were selected for the last edition of Perspektive Deutsches Kino or participated in the current edition of the Script Station, Doc Station or Short Form Station. Additionally producers attending the latest edition of the Talent Project Market can apply.

The fellowship provides a stipend to develop a screenplay or project, comprising €5,000. Based on the filmmaker’s or producer's individual needs, additional €3,000 can be spent to support and strengthen the fellow's artistic or entrepreneurial signature - whether through coaching, mentoring, or personal consultancy.

Berlin Film Residencies

Initiated by Medienboard, the Nipkow Programm and the Berlinale, the Berlin Film Residencies portal offers an overview of various fellowships available to filmmakers worldwide: the Berlin Artist-in-Residence (Berlin AiR) programme, Nipkow Programm, and the Haus am See scholarship. International filmmakers can learn about opportunities in and around Berlin, while creatives based in the capital region can discover work scholarships abroad.

You can find detailed breakdowns of each programme on the Berlin Film Residencies website

Many Berlinale Talents alumni have gone on to receive one of these residencies in Berlin. In fact, our alumni can simply log into their existing Berlinale Talents online profile to apply for the Berlin Film Residencies.

1、Who can apply? Berlinale Talents is aimed at film and television professionals with an existing track record of work and who are willing to share their experiences with others. To be eligible, you need to have made at least one feature-length film OR two short films OR a high-quality drama series or TV movie that have screened in festivals or been widely streamed. Students are only admitted in very exceptional cases, e.g. if they have previously worked in the film business. If you don’t fulfill these criteria yet, don’t worry - simply apply for a future edition! If you wish to apply as a distributor, sales agent or audience designer, you should have been involved in either the distribution or sale of at least two feature-length films or be responsible for a cinema space or festival, e.g. as a curator. If you're applying as a critic, you should be publishing film-related articles, interviews or essays on a regular and professional basis.

2、Do you have special selection criteria?

Since "talent" is a broad term and ultimately a very individual characteristic, we don’t have hard selection criteria beyond the eligibility requirements set out under "Who can apply?". Nevertheless, there are several soft factors in the selection committee’s work. Their decision will take into account aspects such as “professionalism” (education, professional independence, track record etc.), “craftsmanship” (aesthetic capacities as shown e.g. in your work sample), “resonance” (relations with your local communities, acceptance among festival programmers, audiences and press etc.) and the “relevance” of your work (willingness to take artistic risks, to overcome internal and external boundaries, and to deal with individual and social issues etc.). We also look for innovative qualities in your work (new modes of collaboration, technical innovations and other fresh approaches in your field of work). However, please be assured that we don’t check boxes and truly believe in everyone’s individual strengths, including yours. We encourage you to honestly and fully present who you are as an artist and what you think is right to move your work forward, inspire others and impact the world that surrounds you.

3、Is there any restriction on age of applicants?

Berlinale Talents is aimed at working professionals with specific levels of experience behind them, rather than those taking their very first steps in the industry. At the core of Berlinale Talents are our values of inclusivity and equality, so of course we place no limits on the age of applicants.

4、Is there a quota, e.g. for specific countries or fields of work?

We like to ensure a reasonable balance between "hard" factors (e.g. age, gender, regions) and "soft" factors (e.g. creative and social diversity). It's worth noting that in past years, at least 50% of our participants have identified as female, which unfortunately is not yet the case throughout the wider film industry. Nevertheless, there is no specific quota at Berlinale Talents, especially not for countries, and quality and creativity are always the most convincing arguments.

5、How can I submit a project to the Doc Station, Script Station, Short Form Station or Talent Project Market?

Depending on your field of work, you may be eligible to submit your work to one of our four labs for project development. Directors with film or drama series projects at script level may apply for Doc Station, Script Station (also: screenwriters), or Short Form Station (also: VR, XR and crossmedia projects); producers with fully developed feature-length film projects may apply for the Talent Project Market. Please note that you may only apply for one lab per year and that you need to complete the general application as well to be able to submit your project. If you are a Berlinale Talents alumna/alumnus, please log in to your existing profile to apply (under the condition that you have not previously participated in the same lab).

6、How can I take part in one of the Studio programmes?

The Studios for directors, producers, actors, cinematographers, editors, production designers, digital set designers, sales agents, distributors, audience designers, sound designers and score composers do not require an additional application. Depending on the field of work you apply with, you will automatically become part of the corresponding one or two-day workshops during the Talents week.

7、How should I choose my sample of work for the general application?

The sample of work should be about 3 minutes long and must correspond with your first field of work in the application. It should contain a maximum of two scenes (not necessarily from the same film). Please choose a sample that is understandable without the full context of the film and that proves what you are capable of. The sample should highlight your creativity rather than a certain theme or message. All scenes that contain significant non-English dialogue must include on-screen English subtitles. A translated list of dialogue on paper is not sufficient. The sample’s sound/soundtrack should not be altered from the original film. Please make sure that you are the copyright owner and/or have obtained the consent of any other copyright owner(s) for the usage of the work sample. We do not accept showreels, trailers, teasers or commercials.

8、Which projects should I include to my filmography?

Please include all finished films and drama/web series as well as projects in development to which you have contributed or are contributing in a key crew position. You may leave out projects to which you have only contributed e.g. as an assistant, volunteer, intern or that have been handled by other colleagues in a company you are working for.

9、What should I share about me and my career in the Milestones section of the application?

As a creative, your talent is certainly not only to be found in your films. In order to get to know you and your background a bit better, we’d also love you to share some important milestones of your educational training and the film related companies and initiatives you are working at or even have founded. If you are teaching film classes at university or engage with others in a collective cinema space twice a week, this information helps the jurors to get the “full picture” of you. As an initiative dedicated to sustainability in four key fields – Gender Equality & Diversity; Quality Education; Peace, Justice & Understanding; Climate Action – we’d love to join forces with you once you come to Berlin. So if you are for example the founder of an association for female cinematographers in your country, the inventor of a solar powered mobile cinema, or the brain behind a social project reaching out to indigenous audiences, please mention that in the Milestones section (“Social Projects & Engagement”) of your application too. Once invited to Berlinale Talents, we can offer related grants and fellowships and connect you with others who share your commitments.
