The organizing committee of the 78th Cannes Film Festival announced on April 8 that 81-year-old Hollywood legend Robert De Niro will be awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award - the Honorary Palme d'Or at this year's festival. Robert·De Niro

De Niro's connection to Cannes dates back to1976. That year, he appeared with two films: Bernardo Bertolucci's epic "1900" and Martin Scorsese's "Taxi Driver." The latter won the Palme d'Or for its profound portrayal of social outcasts, marking not only a turning point in De Niro's career but also propelling him to international fame. In 2011, he served as the jury president of Cannes, deeply involved in the artistic decisions of the festival.

Speaking about the award, De Niro said:“Cannes brings us storytellers, filmmakers, movie lovers, and friends together, it's like coming home. Especially now, when the world is full of divisions, the power of cinema is even more precious.”

The official Cannes Film Festival website evaluates De Niro:“His face is a symbol of the seventh art, and his style of performance — whether with a tender smile or a piercing gaze — has long since become legendary in film history.”
